The opening ceremony for 2014 Part-time Master Students of Xiamen University was magnificently held in Science and Art Center on the afternoon of March 7th. Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of XMU Lin Dongwei, leaders of related institutions, colleges/schools, and the Graduate School, secretaries of graduates, and all part-time master students enrolled in 2014 attended the ceremony. Executive Dean of the Graduate School Tao Tao chaired the ceremony.
The ceremony opened with the solemn National Anthem of PRC. Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of XMU Lin Dongwei congratulated and welcomed part-time master students enrolled in 2014. He shared with the newcomers the “four spirits” of XMU——the patriotism demonstrated by Tan Kah Kee, the spirit of revolution reflected by the martyr Luo Yangcai, the self-improvement will to run the university represented by Principal Sa Bendong, and the spirit of science showed by Principal Wang Yanan and Prof. Chen Jingrun. These spirits have become the value orientation and motivation for all the staff and students at XMU, encouraging generations to work hard and fulfill dreams. Lin Dongwei sincerely expected the newcomers to inherit and develop the four spirits and become a confident and decent member of XMU. Besides, he encouraged students to keep their academic goal, set noble aspiration and keep missions of the time in mind, constantly learning and improving themselves and contributing to a more brilliant XMU.
On behalf of graduate supervisors, Prof. Chen Jinhua from College of Arts firstly thanked everyone for choosing XMU. He introduced the specialty of knowledge structure and course design for part-time master students and shared the story of his part-time master winning the first prize of the Twelfth National Exhibition of Fine Arts last year. Prof. Chen inspired the graduates that those who kept learning had infinite potential whether being full-time graduates or on-the-job ones.
On behalf of graduates enrolled before, Huang Zhiwei, majored in engineering of grade 2013 from School of Information Science and Technology shared his experience in study and life at XMU. He hoped that the newcomers would keep their enthusiasm in scientific research and life and grasp the precious chance to study at XMU, seizing the day, looking ahead and valuing the study time.
On behalf of graduates in grade 2014, Chen Zhongbin, majoring in law from School of Law made a speech. He said, as a part-time master student who had been worked in society for a long time, it was even more precious to study back to the university. Therefore, they should cherish the chance, maintaining the balance between study, job and family as to integrate into the good atmosphere of study at XMU as soon as possible and fulfill the 3-year study earnestly.
Prof. He Changli, Deputy Dean of School of Law, did a special report of scientific morality and academic discipline development. She deeply analyzed problems exposed in academic discipline and honesty in graduates, pointed out the source and then introduced the system of honesty in foreign universities. Giving an account of two cases of graduates not being honest at XMU, Prof. He expected graduates in grade 2014 to learn the lesson, take academic morality seriously, observe academic discipline and establish correct value of academic honesty.
The opening ceremony ended in the exciting anthem of XMU.
