Just a few days ago, another research paper written by a student of Xiamen University was published on Nature Immunology, one series of Nature. From 2013 to 2015, more than 20 papers written by PhD students of Xiamen University as the first author have been published on Science, Nature and its series. The achievement comes from the scientific education mechanism established by Xiamen University by following laws and regulating administration.

Flexible Educational System

In the mid-term test held by School of Life Science recently, Li Zhenkui, a PhD student in 2014, has passed the test thanks to his ambitious attempt in plasmodium vaccine and feasible research, while the other 13 peers have to attend a second test 6 months later. Mid-term test distribution is an important move of Xiamen University to regulate education process of PhD students and to improve their quality.

In recent years, Xiamen University has made effective endeavors in graduate education. It is said that the courses of Xiamen University has been sharply dropped from 2552 in 2012-2013 academic year to 1752 in 2014-2015 academic year. Moreover, the flexible educational system ranging from 3 to 4 years is undoubtedly a good news for students. “The flexible educational system plays a vital role in educating excellent students,” said Fang Ying, vice dean of the School of Economics.

Short-Term Teaching

The second year master student Zheng Yifen and her classmates from School of Arts have won prizes in international contests frequently and their works are absolutely associated with course assignment in short-term.

Short-term teaching and practicing has become a feature of graduate education of Xiamen University. More and more students are benefiting from the combination of inviting scholars from abroad and home to give instructions and lectures with full-time teachers opening featured courses.

In 2015, Xiamen University saw over 100 famous scholars from abroad and home and elites from various fields opening more than 120 frontier courses and giving over 100 lectures. Nearly 100 groups with almost 1000 graduates have been to country sides, grassroots units and communities all around China to develop social surveys, field works, enterprise internships and medical services. Currently, frontier courses and lectures have become inspiration sources for both students and teachers and programs of practice and internship have become the test field for combination of knowledge with practice.

Reaching Out to the World

During the academic career of Prof. Chen Shanshan in Department of Physics, there is a special turn in 2011 when as a PhD student she received the fund of graduate program from China Scholarship Council and went to study in America. It was in America that she acquired knowledge of and distinguished herself in the field of graphene, which then was little known to the public.

Now as Prof. Chen Shanshan returns to Xiamen University and starts to teach students, she repeatedly tells her story to her students and encourages them to manage to go abroad and expand their horizons. Maybe there is unexpected fruit waiting for them.

In 2015, there are 118 students who have funded by graduate program of China Scholarship Council and they will be sent to top international universities.
