“Talking about Study and Life”—A Meeting Held for Graduate Students from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao

On the morning of February 23rd, Graduate School invited some graduate students who were from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao to have a discussion about their study and life in XMU, and their suggestions for further development of graduate education. The meeting was chaired by Tao Tao, executive dean of Graduate School. Other attenders included Fang Ying, vice dean of Graduate School, Xue Chenglong, vice director of Office of Academic Affairs, Fan Lijuan, vice director of Office of Postgraduate Degrees and Program, Luo Chunxia, vice director of Office of General Affairs and staff from Office of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Affairs.

At the meeting, graduate students from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Maocao gave introductions to their life and study in XMU. They said that patient instruction of their supervisors, comprehensive syllabus and courses facilitated their study well. All in all, they were satisfied with the arrangement and management. Meanwhile, they also made some suggestions about the training program of graduate students. Zhang Yangyang, a Taiwanese graduate student from Medical College, showed his appreciation of the constantly perfected facilities for academic study and suggested that it would be better if they could be offered with more careers guidance. Liu Changqi, Taiwanese doctoral alumni of the Wan Yanan Institute for Studies in Economics, was very satisfied about his doctoral life in XMU. He totally agreed with the training program of Wan Yanan Institute. He said the life in XMU was a precious memory for him and a facilitator for his career. Liao Ruojun, a Taiwanese doctoral student from School of Management, hoped that she could have more opportunities to participate in innovative entrepreneurship and overseas exchange programs. A Taiwanese doctoral student from Overseas Education College proposed that more academic journals from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao should be added, which was helpful for their future job hunting.

Additionally, all graduate students at the meeting hoped that Graduate School could enhance the management of graduate students who were from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao and offer more attention and helps, especially in the arrangement of fresh students and the scholarship policies. They also expected that a new office should be established for Taiwan, Hong kong and Macao affairs to offer a platform for them to communicate and provide solutions to possible problems.

At the meeting, leaders of Graduate School had a better understanding of the needs and suggestions of these graduate students, and answered their questions. At last, Fang Ying, vice dean of Graduate School, said that Graduate School would take students’ advice and make improvement. Tao Tao, executive dean of Graduate Schools, stated that it was the first time to have a face-to-face meeting with graduate students from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. Students could also send their suggestions or complaints of problems they encountered via dean’s email or go directly to the office of Graduate School. The Graduate School would spare no efforts to resolve problems for students so that they could have a better environment to study.
