On the
afternoon of March 5th, a grand opening ceremony for the 2015 session of
on-the-job graduate students kicked off at the lecture hall of the Science and
Art Center. Mr. Lai Kaihong, Deputy Party Secretary and Secretary of the University
Commission for Discipline Inspection,directors of
relative departments, heads of relative schools and graduate schools, secretary
for graduate students and all 2015 session of on-the-job graduate students
attended the ceremony chaired by Mr. Tao Tao, executive dean of the Graduate
School.
The
opening ceremony started with the national anthem of China. Mr. Lai delivered a
sincere congratulation and warm welcome to all students, and introduced to them
the development history of Xiamen University as well as the remarkable
achievements made in graduate education, especially in on-the-job graduate
education. Xiamen University has a long history with year 2016 marks the 95th
anniversary of it and the 30th anniversary of the Graduate School. It is among
the universities which first recruited and trained MBA and EMBA students and
one of the pilot universities for MPAcc education. In recent years, making full
use of its traditional advantages, Xiamen University has trained a large number
of high level applied talents for the society, greatly improved the quality of
on-the-job graduate education. In 2014, Zhang Yuhui, a postgraduate student
with a professional degree of arts, won the only gold medal of lacquer painting
in the National Fine Arts Exhibition with her work named.
Mr. Lai shared with students the Four Spirits of Xiamen University which has
been inspiring generations of members of Xiamen University to strive hard and
fulfill their dreams. It has been the value orientation and internal impetus of
people of XMU. He expressed his sincere hope that all freshmen will inherit and
develop the Four Spirits to mold themselves into confident and decent members
of XMU. He also encouraged them to stick to their academic dreams, to set up
lofty aspirations and to bear in mind need of the times, constantly polishing
and improving themselves to become beautiful scenery of XMU.
Xiahou
Jianbing, associate professor of Software School, supervisor representative and
director of Students’ Affairs Office, first expressed his gratitude for
choosing XMU. With vivid examples, he shared with freshmen some advices about
how to spend the following time in XMU. He said, since you have chosen to work
on your graduate degrees, you should make a plan and be willing to sacrifice
for it. While pursuing academic dreams, being a decent person is also important.
You should focus on cultivating scientific spirit, setting up scientific
mindset and good academic manner and professional ethics. All freshmen are also
expected to work hard, not afraid of hardship and tiredness and transform what
they have learnt into the driving force in work.
The
sophomore representative is a 2014 session of on- the-job graduate student from
the School of Public Affairs, Nong Jiasong. Starting from his personal
experiences, he exchanged his feelings about studying and living in XMU with
all freshmen. He said that continuing on study can make us happy. It can both
enrich our spiritual life as well as improving our working condition. He also
shared with them three realms of studying. He encouraged them to keep their
enthusiasm for studying and utilize this precious opportunity to understand the
world and try to change it for a better one.
The
freshman representative is Liu Lianqing, a 2015 session of on-the-job
postgraduate student of accounting in School of Management. She said in her speech
that, as an on-the-job graduate student, getting an opportunity to get back to
school is all the more precious after years of struggling in society. We should
cherish our time in school and turn it into the most valuable assets. Under the
guidance of teachers, we should work hard and strive for our dreams.
After
the ceremony, professor He Lixin, vice-dean of School of Law, delivered the
first class on building scholarship integrity among on-the-job graduate
students. She further explained the multiple value and the unique foundation of
integrity from five dimensions, such as Ethics, Economics and Law, thoroughly
analyzed current problems and their roots existing in graduate scholarship
integrity and shared systems of integrity management in foreign universities. She
also talked about problem cases about graduate scholarship integrity and
encouraged them to learn a lesson, to strengthen self-discipline in scholarship
ethics, to abide by standards and to set up correct and honest academic view.
